“I was asked how I know I’m making ‘progress’ with a coach, and the answer I’ve been giving lately is “when they ask me a question I didn’t see coming”.
Interesting, as I have been seeing this same answer in the context of coach and athlete — “co-learning”, as I think it has been called.
I don’t do enough 1-to-1s to have much direct experience of this, beyond working with the youngest players, who often present (non-verbal) surprise questions.
Are you not writing about learning how to think thru what issues you are faced with? We can only surmise what comes in the future and rarely get it completely right with those guesses. But with the right tools in our "tool box" with which to face those issues. There must be an opportunity before the fact to have used and learned to refine/practice those tools so that good thinking strategies become the framework to address future conundrums . Those tools must include how to work with others and their disciplines to not only solve complex problems but how to frame the questions more clearly that the conundrums present.
Society and our species need good nimble minds to face the future!
